Dr. Matthew Weston secures a faculty position at the University of Vermont

Dr. Matthew Weston, postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. John Swann, the director of the Cain Foundation Laboratories, has received an appointment as a tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Neurological sciences at the Univeristy of Vermont. He will start his new position in September.

Dr, Weston completed his Bachelor of Science from the University of Virginia in 1993 and received his Ph.D. from the Baylor College of Medicine in 2009. During his tenure as a postdoctoral fellow, he studied the role of mTOR signaling pathway in synaptic transmission and received the prestigious K99/R00 award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)..

The goal of his laboratoy will be to better understand fundamental mechanisms that enable fast synaptic transmission in the central nervous system and how these mechanisms are altered in neurological disorders, especially epilepsy. To do this he plans to use electrophysiological and optical monitoring of neurons and neuronal circuits from mice with genetic mutations that model those found in human epilepsy patients.
